is a chronic disease, in which the large intestine (colon) becomes inflamed and ulcerated (pitted or eroded). Ulcerative Colitis always affects the rectum (part of the large bowel, which lies just inside the anus) and can be limited to just the rectum (proctitis) or affect the entire colon (total colitis).
Treatment is aimed at controlling the inflammation, reducing symptoms and replacing any lost fluids and nutrients. Bleeding, for example, often causes iron deficiency anemia.
Some foods can exacerbate ulcerative colitis symptoms. It is important to eliminate trigger foods and prepare foods in ways that won’t cause further irritation.
